PORTLAND, Ore. – Brandon Zambrano and Hugo Rhoads netted goals for the Portland Pilots, but the Marquette Golden Eagles held on for a 4-2 win before 1,003 fans Sunday afternoon at Merlo Friday. Portland falls to 0-2-0 on the season, while Marquette improves to 1-1-0.
Despite just an 8-7 edge in shot attempts in the first half, Marquette was able to capitalize with three goals in the initial 31 minutes of regulation.
Kelmend Islami started the scoring in the sixth minute as he headed in a flick-on from John Pothast following a corner kick. Islami doubled the margin in the 14th minute as he finished a thru ball to the low left from the top of the box.
Marquette went up 3-0 in the 31st minute when Alex McBride tapped in a cross with assists credited to Jake Taylor and David Selvaggi.
Portland got one back in the 34th minute when Matthew Coffey's initial shot was saved, but Zambrano jumped on it and finished for the Pilots' first goal of 2015.
The Golden Eagles wasted little time in getting their fourth after halftime as C. Nortey redirected a Jesper Larsson service inside the near post 55 seconds into the second stanza.
The Pilots made it 4-2 in the 55th minute as Rhoads drilled a corner kick service into the back netting from the top of the box. Coffey was credited with his second assist of the afternoon.
Portland continued to push and had a few opportunities late, most notably an Eddie Sanchez header that clipped the crossbar in the 70th minute.
Marquette outshot Portland by a 13-12 margin for the game and had an 8-4 margin in corner kicks. Pilot sophomore goalkeeper Paul Christensen recorded four saves, while Luis Barraza made three stops for the Golden Eagles.
Portland will look to bounce back next weekend as host of the Nike Portland Invitational. The Pilots will take on Grand Canyon on Friday at 7 p.m. and then Vermont on Sunday at 5 p.m. Free live video for both matches will be available.
