Box Score SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- After a scoreless first half, the No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish scored two goals after the break to claim a 2-0 nonconference win over the Portland Pilots on a humid Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. The loss gives the Pilots (1-2-0) a split on their trip to the Midwest, while the Irish improve to 4-0-0 on the year.
Â
Portland goalkeeper Hanna de Haan and the UP defense did well to keep the game 0-0 during the first 45 minutes. In the 32nd minute Notre Dame's Kaleigh Omstead sent a shot towards the upper right corner of the frame, but de Haan got there in time to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Â
Junior midfielder Allison Wetherington had Portland's best scoring chance in the first half, hitting a shot that was blocked in the 41st minute.
Â
Notre Dame's first goal then came on a counter after Portland had a throw-in deep in the Irish half. Natalie Jacobs dribbled up field before finding Anna Gilbertson just outside the 18. Gilbertson then slotted one past de Haan, making it 1-0 in the 49th minute with her second goal of the year.
Â
De Haan followed the goal with a couple more nice saves, including a diving stop on a header from Sandra Yu in the 53rd minute.
Â
The Pilots did have some quality possession throughout the second half, but were ultimately unable to find the back of the net. The Irish then added an insurance goal in the 85th minute after a scramble inside the area. The ball fell to the feet of Sabrina Flores, who hit one inside the right post for the 2-0 lead.
Â
De Haan finished the afternoon with three saves, while her Notre Dame counterpart Lexi Nicholas made one stop.
Â
The Pilots next travel to Seattle, Wash., for the 2015 Husky Invitational and games against Michigan and Illinois. Portland will first face the Wolverines at 4:30 p.m. on Friday before playing the Illini at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
