2015 SchedulePORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots swept the Grand Canyon Antelopes on Saturday morning in the second match of the Portland Classic at the Chiles Center. Sarah Savoca and Hannah Troutman combined for half of Portland's kills en route to their fourth win in a row.
Portland (4-1) swept Grand Canyon (0-5) with set scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-20.
The Pilots jumped out early in the first set to take a commanding 10-4 lead. GCU worked back into the game a bit, but 5-7 junior Djurdjina Milovic won a big challenge at the net to subdue the Antelope momentum and keep the lead at 5 at 12-7. Savoca had a team high five kills during the game which allowed Portland to maintain the lead. Troutman drilled a hit off the GCU block and out of bounds to set the Pilots up for set point 24-18. The Antelopes turned away one game point before Katie Sullivan hit one home to claim the first set 25-19.
The Antelopes came out running in the second taking the early lead thanks to a four point run. Portland responded with 10 unanswered points, which included three service aces by Morgan Robinson, to take the lead 15-12. The comeback would continue when the Pilots ended a 17-1 run ahead of CGU 22-13. The end of the set was similar to the first with Sullivan hitting the final point and a final score of 25-19. Savoca added three kills to her total to lead the Pilots with eight kills through the first two sets.
The third set was a battle for momentum as both teams used runs to get ahead of the other, but it was the Pilots who pulled away late to take the third set 25-20 and win the match. There were nine tied scores and four lead changes during the final set which included a huge block by Brittney Markwith and Troutman which set the game even at 15. Portland's final push to get to 25 began after Emily Liger hit a kill down the line to put the Pilots up two at 21-19.
The Pilots will return to the court this evening when they face UC Riverside at 7:00 p.m.
