MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Gaels made their first 11 field goal attempts of the second half en route to an 89-74 victory over the Portland Pilots on Saturday night in West Coast Conference men's basketball action at McKeon Pavilion.
Portland junior point guard Alec Wintering scored 13 points on the night to become the 38th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He entered the game needing 10 points to join the club.
The Gaels (17-2, 8-1 WCC) solidified sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a home sweep of Gonzaga and the Pilots (9-13, 3-6) this week.
Saint Mary's shot 63 percent from the field and gained a 39-18 rebounding margin. Junior forward Dane Pineau went 10-for-11 from the field and finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Emmett Naar added 20 points and eight assists.
Portland sophomore D'Marques Tyson continued his stellar play of late and scored a game-high 16 points off the bench, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. Tyson has reached double figures in three straight games and hit at least four triples in all three outings.
Bryce Pressley added 15 points and five rebounds for the Pilots, while freshman guard Jazz Johnson chipped in 12 points.
The Gaels started the game off by making 8-of-9 field goals and led by 17 points with 5:33 left in the first half, but the Pilots caught fire from the perimeter behind a pair of three-pointers each from Tyson and Wintering to cut the deficit to 42-35 at halftime.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half, but as the Pilots slowed down the Gaels continued to convert. Saint Mary's scored on its first 11 possessions, including a trio of three-pointers. The margin would grow to as much as 20 points late.
Portland will return to the Chiles Center next week to host San Francisco on Thursday and Santa Clara on Saturday. Both games will tip-off at 7 p.m. Thursday's game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest and Saturday be broadcast on CampusInsider.com.
