PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Pilots compiled a season-high in shots and Larkin Russell and Hannah Griffiths Boston each found the back of the net as Portland rolled to a 2-0 win over the Pacific Tigers in a West Coast Conference women's soccer match played on Friday night at Merlo Field. Russell, a freshman, collects her first career game-winner, while sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Lusby records her fourth shutout of the year.
Â
Russell's goal came early as the Pilots (8-4-3, 2-2-1 WCC) took command in the second minute. Maddie Dieker sent a pass across the top of the box, and Russell was there to bury a shot into the left corner of the net from 25 yards out. It's Russell's second goal of the year, and Dieker notches her first assist.
Â
The Pilots were relentless with their attack all night long, while limiting the Tigers (1-11-1, 1-4-0 WCC) to just three shots for the game. Kaycie Young had a shot tipped over the crossbar in the 23rd minute, and Allison Wetherington nearly re-directed a shot past the Pacific keeper, but it glanced off the outside of the post on its way out.
Â
And then just before the end of the first half, Russell nearly duplicated her goal in the in the 44th minute, but this time her attempt was high as the Pilots took their 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Â
Portland continued to pressure Pacific's final third in the second half, sending a barrage of crosses into the 18. But the Tigers were able to keep the score 1-0, with a bevy of saves from Pacific keeper Melissa Ma. Both Wetherington and Young had shots denied, while Kimberly Hazlett hit one wide before having another shot saved.
Â
Hanna Armendariz hit a shot just high of the cross bar, as did Dieker in the in 72nd minute.
Â
And then in the 75th minute, Griffiths Boston gave the Pilots a little breathing room with her eighth goal of the season, which ranks third in the WCC. The junior gained possession near the top left corner of the box, took a couple of touches and hit a perfectly placed shot into top corner of the net from 24 yards.
Â
The Pilots totaled 27 shots on the night, 11 on-goal, while Lusby made one save for the blank sheet.
Â
Sunday brings a visit from the Saint Mary's Gaels in Portland's final regular season home game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., and the Pilots will honor their five seniors (Ellie Boon, Hanna de Haan, Alyssa Edenstrom, Devlyn Jeter and Allison Wetherington) with a pre-game ceremony. Â
