PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Saint Mary's Gaels broke a scoreless tie with three goals in the second half to defeat the Portland Pilots 3-0 in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field.
Â
After 58 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Gaels (3-12-2, 1-5-0 WCC) scored their first goal when Samantha Dion found Kiana Quarles inside the 18. Quarles did the rest, finishing inside the left post to hand the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Â
Hannah Diaz would make it a 2-0 game in the 66th minute when she buried a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. And then in the 83rd minute, Dion and Quarles hooked up one more time, and this time Quarles' second goal of the game made the score 3-0.
Â
The Pilots (8-5-3, 2-3-1 WCC) did create some chances in the second half, including in the 61st minute when freshman Rachel Khaw had a shot saved by SMC keeper Julia McDonald. In the 74th minute, senior Allison Wetherington found sophomore Lauren Marin with a through ball just inside the 18, but Marin's shot was wide as the Pilots remained scoreless.
Â
Freshman Kimberly Hazlett then rattled the woodwork with a shot off the left post in the 82nd minute, and the Gaels would hold on from there for the huge road win.
Â
Sunday was senior day as the Pilots honored Ellie Boon, Hanna de Haan, Alyssa Edenstrom, Devlyn Jeter and Wetherington with a pre-game ceremony.
Â
The game with the Gaels was also Portland's final home match of the 2016 regular season as they now head on the road for the final three games. Next Friday the Pilots will at San Francisco, while Sunday brings a contest at Santa Clara.
