SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. ---- Portland senior Ellie Boon claimed her second career game-winner and sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Lusby registers her fifth shutout of the year as the Pilots topped the San Francisco Dons 1-0 in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Friday night at Negoesco Stadium. Lusby has five blank sheets in six starts this fall, and the Pilots (9-5-3, 3-3-1 WCC) have seven shutouts overall.
Â
Boon's goal, the first of the season for the left back and the second of her career, came in the fifth minute on a perfectly place corner from Allison Wetherington. Wetherington sent in a ball towards the far post that cleared the USF keeper Makayla Presgrave, and Boon was there to knock it in to hand the visitors the early lead.
Â
And the lead would stand, thanks to a stingy Portland backline, which limited the Dons (6-11-0, 2-5-0 WCC) to just one shot on-goal all night.
Â
Meanwhile the Pilots continued to create chances, searching for an insurance goal. Freshman Kimberly Halzett led Portland with a team-high six shots, and she had a pair of shots blocked seconds apart during the first half. Hazlett also had perhaps the Pilots' best chance in the second half, but her shot from the center of the box in the 70th minute was saved by Presgrave.
Â
Portland freshman Rylee Seekins, who made her first collegiate career start, hit a shot wide in the 71st minute, and Hazlett followed with a shot that was high of the crossbar.
Â
The Pilots finished the game with 10 shots, and Lusby was forced into making only one save.
Â
On Sunday the Pilots will make the trek south to Santa Clara to face the Broncos at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff for the two WCC rivals is set for 1 p.m.
