PORTLAND, Ore. – The Terry Porter era at University of Portland tipped off Saturday night as the Pilots defeated Multnomah University, 87-57, in an exhibition game at the Chiles Center. Senior point guard Alec Wintering led the Pilots with 29 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals.
The Lions, a member of the NAIA Cascade Collegiate Conference, entered the game with a 2-1 record and hung around for a good portion of the first half before Wintering took over. Portland's All-West Coast Conference floor general scored 19 points in the period including the final six points as the Pilots carried a 42-27 lead into the break.
Multnomah briefly cut the margin to 50-36 early in the second half, but Wintering sparked a 10-2 run with six points and an assist on a Philipp Hartwich layup to widen the margin.
The Pilots shot 53 percent overall and used their size and strength to gain a 39-29 rebounding margin. The Lions finished the game at 39 percent overall. Multnomah holds numerous national records for three-pointers made and attempted and finished 10-for-26 from beyond the arc on the night.
Portland gained a 54-14 scoring margin in the paint, 27-8 off of turnovers and 16-2 in second chance opportunities.
Junior forward Gabe Taylor added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Pilots with 12 coming in the second half. Sophomore guard Jazz Johnson was also in double figures with 12 points. Hartwich grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Statistics will not count toward season and career totals since it was an exhibition contest, but four new Pilots got their first taste of collegiate competition Saturday night. Freshmen Andrew Ferguson, Joseph Smoyer, Malcolm Porter and Alec Monson all took the court.
Smoyer had four points and five rebounds in eight second half minutes. Porter made his only shot attempt, Ferguson hit a three-pointer, while Monson did not attempt a shot.
Darius Redrick paced the Lions with a 12 points, while Jon Viles and Ben Grandle added 11 each.
Portland will return to the court on Friday, Nov. 4 for its final exhibition contest against Evergreen State. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center with tickets starting at $3. The Pilots open the regular season by hosting UC Riverside on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
