PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland junior goalkeeper Paul Christensen is the West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week after the Pilots ran their winning streak to seven straight with a pair of shutouts at Merlo Field. The Pilots also remained perfect in the WCC with a 1-0 win over LMU on Friday night and a 4-0 victory over San Diego on Sunday.
Â
Christensen and the Pilots have not allowed a goal in more than 270 minutes. The Pilots have also matched the legendary 1988 Portland team for the best conference start ever (5-0), and have the best record after 15 games (11-3-1) since the 1995 team, which was the last UP squad to advance to the College Cup.
Â
Christensen was masterful on Friday night against the Lions as the Pilots claimed a key 1-0 win. The junior had three saves total, which included a diving save to open the second half on a well-hit LMU shot from distance in the 48th minute. Christensen kept the game at 0-0 with another stellar save in the 62nd minute when he punched an LMU free kick over the crossbar, and he came through with a clutch save in the 90th minute after the Pilots had taken a 1-0 lead.
Â
Christensen provided three more saves on Sunday as the Pilots rolled to a 4-0 win over the San Diego Toreros, giving him five blank sheets on the year.
Â
He's the second Pilot to earn WCC Player of the Week honors this season, joining Eddie Sanchez who's won the award twice.
