PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Kaylie Van Loo led three players in double figures with a game-high 13 points as the Pilots were solid in their debut and rolled to an 81-49 win over the Willamette Bearcats in an exhibition women's basketball game played on Tuesday night at the Chiles Center. Holly Blades added 12 points and Corissa Turley was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field en route to 10 points.
Blades had two early three's as the Pilots jumped out to a double-digit lead, and Portland held Willamette without a field goal for the final 7:24 of the first period to lead 13-3 after one. It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Bearcats' scoring drought continued, and lay-ups from Ashley Gray and Van Loo pushed the Portland lead to 17-3.
The Bearcats would then knock down some shots and a couple of free throws, but the Pilots' lead increased with the help of a balanced scoring attack. Gray had an offensive board and a put-back to give the Portland's their largest advantage to that point, 33-15.
Gray, who shot 4-for-5 in the first half, led all scorers with eight points at the break as the Pilots took a 35-19 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter the Pilots embarked on a lengthy 17-0 run, which was sparked by two three-pointers from Blades. Darian Slaga and Turley added back-to-back lay-ups, and Turley followed with a three-pointer as the Pilots enjoyed their biggest lead of the night, 52-21.
The lead would grow as the Pilots out-scored the Bearcats by 26-12 in the third and took a 30-point cushion into the final frame. Willamette recovered a little in the fourth, but the Pilots would cruised to the win.
The Pilots shot 53.8 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Bearcats 38-24, led by eight boards from Julie Spencer. Gray finished with nine points, and Slaga and freshman Keala Quinlan each scored eight as Portland received scoring from 11 different players. Van Loo handed out six assists.
Next up for the Pilots is their final preseason tune-up as they host Warner Pacific in an exhibition contest on Saturday night. Tip-off at the Chiles Center is set for 5 p.m.
