PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland Pilots senior Eddie Sanchez was selected to Top Drawer Soccer's Best XI Third Team, while teammate Benji Michel was named to the Freshman Best XI. Both Sanchez and Michel had stellar years as they helped the Pilots reach the NCAA Postseason and win the West Coast Conference Championship.
A native of Canby, Ore., Sanchez was also named the WCC Player of the Year and he landed on the NSCAA All-Far West Region Team. The forward/midfielder had six goals and seven assists on the season, and he notched a hat trick at Gonzaga on Oct. 9. He finishes his collegiate career as a four-time selection to the All-WCC First Team, and he's the first Pilot to be named the league's player of the year since 2003. He was also recently invited to the MLS Player Combine.
An NSCAA All-West Region Third Team selection, Michel was the WCC Freshman of the Year, while also landing on the all-conference first team and the league's all-freshman team. His 10 goals and 24 points led the WCC, and he claimed four assists and two game-winners. From Orlando, Fla., Michel is UP's first league freshman of the year since Sanchez in 2013.
