DAVIS, Calif. --- Portland's Cooper Hummel went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and three RBI's, starter Jordan Wilcox allowed just three hits in 6.0 scoreless innings, and the Pilots opened the Geoff Loomis era with a decisive 12-0 win over the UC Davis Aggies on Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. Kevin Wade also went yard during the win, and Ryan Barr chipped in with three hits and two RBI's.
Â
The Pilots (1-0), who combined for 12 hits on the afternoon, took control of the game early when they plated seven runs during the second inning. With the bases loaded, Michael Forgione brought home Portland's first runs of the season with a two-run single to right-center field. Brady Kerr followed with an RBI single, and Hummel pushed the lead to 5-0 with a base hit up the middle that scored two more.
Â
Barr kept the inning going with an RBI single to center field, and Hummel capped the scoring when he trotted home courtesy a balk.
Â
Meanwhile Wilcox (1-0) was cruising on the mound. The senior right-hander didn't allow a hit until the top of the fourth inning, and he only allowed one runner to make it past second base. He struck out six Aggies (0-1) on the day, while not issuing a walk.
Â
The Pilots gave their starter a little breathing home when they scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Caleb Whalen, who had been hit by a pitch his previous two at-bats, drilled a double into leftfield to begin the frame. Hummel, Portland's clean-up hitter, then came through once again with a single up the middle.
Â
A few batters later, freshman Cody Hawken tallied his first collegiate RBI's when his single to center field scored both Barr and Hummel.
Â
Hummel kept his solid day going in the top of the seventh inning when he drove a ball into right field for a triple, before scoring on Barr's ground-out to second base. Wade then left the yard with a towering shot to left-center field, making it a 12-0 ballgame.
Â
Reliever Alex Fisher replaced Wilcox on the mount to begin the bottom of the seventh, and the junior righty held the Aggies scoreless during the final three innings to secure the win and notch the save. Fisher struck out two and allowed just one hit.
Â
Zach Stone (0-1) takes the loss for UC Davis after allowing seven runs on five hits and four walks in 2.0 innings. Reliever Blake Hannah yielded five runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings, and Ryan Steindorf worked a scoreless top of the ninth.
Â
The win is the first for Loomis, who is in his first year as head coach of the Pilots. The UP Athletics Hall of Fame member and former standout on the diamond for the Pilots was hired during the off-season after 13 seasons at Pacific Lutheran.
Â
The 12-0 win is also Portland's largest margin of victory since April of 2011, and it's the largest margin of victory in a shutout since March of 2006.
Â
The Pilots and Aggies, who are scheduled to play four games during their series this weekend, next play a double header on Saturday, with the first game set for 11 a.m.
