MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland's Kaylie Van Loo, Darian Slaga and Ellie Woerner each scored 11 points on Saturday afternoon, but the Saint Mary's Gaels prevailed 95-53 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game at McKeon Pavilion. The Pilots next return home to the Chiles Center for their final two games of the regular season.
Â
For the second straight game on this road trip, the Pilots (3-24, 1-15 WCC) found themselves in an early hole and never fully recovered. After the Pilots claimed a one-point lead in the first quarter courtesy four straight points by Woerner, the Gaels (21-6, 12-4 WCC) embarked on a lengthy run to stretch their lead to double digits.
Â
Portland tried to climb back into it in the second quarter, and another lay-up by Woerner cut the deficit to 14 points with 7:25 remaining in the half. But again the Gaels had an answer, this time pushing their lead to 20 points at the break. Saint Mary's would cruise to the win from there.
Â
Slaga was 3-for-3 from deep to lead the Pilots in scoring for the second straight game. The freshman guard also made her first career start on Saturday. Woerner continues her stellar freshman campaign, hitting double digits in points for the 21st time this season, and Van Loo was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Â
Six Gaels scored in double figures, led by Devon Brookshire, Devyn Galland and Hannah Kaser, who each scored a team-high 14 points. The Gaels had an impressive 27 assists on 34 field goals, and shot 54.0 percent overall. They also knocked down 14 three-pointers.
