PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland freshman Ellie Woerner scored 14 points and the Pilots out-scored No. 22 Brigham Young in the second half, but the Cougars jumped out to an early lead before a claiming an 84-59 win in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
Â
The game was close early as both Julie Spencer and Sara Zaragoza knocked down a handful of buckets. With about three minutes left in the first in the first quarter, the pair exchanged field goals and the Pilots were within 14-12.
Â
But that's when BYU embarked on a run that would stretch into the second quarter and allow the Cougars to take control of the game. BYU senior Lexi Rydalch had 16 points by the half and the Cougars led big.
Â
The Pilots came out of the break energized and put up 39 points to BYU's 33 during the game's final 20 minutes. Woerner did most of her damage in the second half, hitting from all over the floor to lead the Pilots in scoring for the 19th time this season. It's also the 22nd time for the freshman wing to reach double figures in points.
Â
Zaragoza nearly reached a career-high with eight points, and Madison Ward provided a spark off the bench by connecting on two three-pointers.
Â
Rydalch, who ranks fourth in the nation in scoring, finished with a game-high 27 points.
Â
BYU shot 53.1 percent from the floor and combined for 12 three-pointers. The Pilots shot 58.3 percent in the fourth quarter and 41.8 percent on the game. Kaylie Van Loo, Holly Blades and Corissa Turley each chipped in with six points, and the Pilots hit seven from beyond the three-point arc.
Â
The Pilots next play their final home game on Saturday when the San Diego Toreros visit for a 2 p.m. game. Portland will celebrate senior day and honor Sara Ines Hernandez with a pre-game ceremony.
