PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 72 Portland men's tennis team dispensed of Northern Colorado in a dominating 7-0 victory Sunday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-7 overall.
The Pilots were coming off of a loss at BYU on Friday night and were well-prepared for the quick turnaround.
"I thought we had a good chance to be successful today, but was a little nervous about how we would respond from the travel and change of conditions," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I feel like we have a very resilient group so I wasn't too concerned about how they would bounce back from Friday's loss. But the other elements that go along with a weekend like this caused me concern. I think today went as well as it could have based on those circumstances."
Portland cruised to the doubles point as sophomores Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia won 6-0 at No. 1 and freshman Goutham Sundaram and senior Kent Andreasen won 6-1 at No. 3.
The Pilots then swept all six singles matches without losing more than three games in a single set.
"It was great to get Goutham Sundaram in the doubles line-up and earn first career dual match victory," Gross added. "Goutham has continued to work hard on his game even though he hasn't gotten much action yet, but today he showed that he is ready when called upon. Everyone came ready to do the work today and it showed in the outcome."
Sophomore Alex Wallace and freshman Carlos Donat each improved to 6-1 this spring in dual singles matches. Both have now won five in a row.
