MALIBU, Calif. – The Portland Pilots held on for a thrilling 73-70 victory over Pepperdine in a nationally televised West Coast Conference basketball game Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Pilots and handed the Waves their first home loss of the season.
Portland junior Jarrel Marshall recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while junior point guard Alec Wintering finished with 19 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with a minute left in regulation.
After leading for the first 33-plus minutes, the Pilots (10-15, 4-8 WCC) fell behind by four points at 62-58 with 6:21 left, but Portland responded with a three-pointer by D'Marques Tyson and layup from Jazz Johnson to re-take the lead.
The Waves (14-9, 7-5) had a put-back by senior Stacy Davis to regain the lead and would hold on to it until Wintering's step-back three-pointer gave the Pilots a 72-70 edge with 1:06 left. Pepperdine missed two three-pointers and then a pair of free throws with 9.6 seconds left. Marshall corralled the rebound and made one of two free throws for a three-point lead.
Portland fouled with 3.6 seconds left and Pepperdine again missed both free throws. The rebound was tipped out of bounds to the Pilots with 1.3 seconds remaining. Portland then tossed the inbounds toward their own basket, but it trickled out of bounds and gave the Waves one last shot to tie it up. Lamond Murray got off a corner three-pointer, but Marshall blocked it as time expired.
Wintering was solid all-around once again on Thursday, adding a season-high seven rebounds and six assists while making 7-of-13 from the field.
Tyson drilled five three-pointers and finished with 16 points, his sixth consecutive game in double figures. The sophomore sharp shooter has averaged five three-pointers per game during the run, converting 30-of-55 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore forward Gabe Taylor also had a solid all-around game with nine points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots against Pepperdine's physical frontcourt.
Davis finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds, while junior forward Jett Raines also had 27 points to lead the Waves.
Portland shot 47 percent from the field and made 9-of-16 three-pointers. Pepperdine struggled to 37 percent overall and 3-for-16 from three-point range. Both teams struggled at the free throw line with the Pilots converting 10-of-18 and Pepperdine making just 17-of-37.
The Waves dominated the rebounds by a 49-39 margin, including 24 on the offensive end. Pepperdine gained a 24-11 edge in second chance points, while the Pilots had a 25-3 advantage in bench scoring.
Marshall provided the early spark for Portland with 13 first half points as the Pilots carried a 39-29 lead into halftime.
The Pilots will conclude the road trip on Saturday at Loyola Marymount. The game will tip-off at 3 p.m. and be aired live on TheW.tv. Radio coverage starts at 2:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
