PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Ashley Gray had 14 points and seven rebounds, Kaylie Van Loo finished with 12 points and seven assists and Darian Slaga added 13 points off the bench, but the Loyola Marymount Lions prevailed over the Pilots 77-62 on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The Lions led by seven at the break and outscored the Pilots by eight points in the second half en route to the win.
Â
Gray was solid all afternoon and nearly claimed Portland's (3-21, 1-12 WCC) first double-double of the season. The sophomore post shot seven of 10 overall and led the team in rebounds.
Â
Van Loo also flirted with a double-double, and she and Slaga combined to score 13 of Portland's 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Pilots tried to overcome a 13-point deficit. Slaga had three three-pointers during the final frame, which helped the Pilots go on a quick 9-2 run to cut LMU's lead down to six points.
Â
But after a lay-up by Portland's Corissa Turley made the score 68-62, the Lions ended the game with a 9-0 run, covering the final four minutes.
Â
The Pilots out-shot LMU 42.9 percent to 41.2 percent, but the Lions used a 22-8 edge in points off of turnovers and a 19-9 advantage in second chance points to claim the win. The Pilots had just five turnovers at the half, but finished with 17 overall.
Â
LMU's (8-16, 4-9 WCC) Leslie Lopez-Wood hit her first three three-pointers of the game before finishing with 20 points to lead all scorers. Sophie Taylor had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Â
Lopez-Wood's early three-pointers let the Lions jump ahead in the first quarter before taking a 12-point lead into the second period. The lead stretched to 14 before the Pilots answered with a 10-0 run. Both Holly Blades and Hannah Mattson knocked down a three-pointer during the surge, which allowed the Pilots to climb within 28-24. The Lions momentarily pushed the lead back to double digits before the Pilots pulled within seven at the half, with the help of some buckets from Gray.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a trip to Spokane, Wash., on Saturday, Feb. 13, to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Tip-off at the McCarthey Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
