OREM, Utah --- The Utah Valley Wolverines broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the fourth inning before holding off the Portland Pilots to claim a 6-4 win on Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. The win evens the series at one apiece, with game three of the four-game set scheduled for tomorrow night.
After three-and-a-half innings of scoreless baseball, the Wolverines (8-8) got to Portland (9-5) starter Davis Tominaga for a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Only one of the runs was earned as the Pilots hurt themselves with three errors in the inning. Spencer Gothberg and Trevor Howell each had an RBI double during the outburst.
Now trailing, the Pilots immediately responded with three runs in the following inning. With two on and one out, Geoffrey Lee came through with a clutch hit when he sent a two-run single into left field. Lee would eventually come around to score, cutting the deficit to just two when Caleb Whalen picked up an RBI with a double down the left field line.
Whalen entered the weekend No. 2 in the nation in doubles, and he now has nine on the season.
Paul Estrada provided some insurance for the Wolverines in the bottom of the fifth inning when he knocked in his second RBI of the game with single to right field.
The insurance was needed because the Pilots scored another run in the top of the eighth before getting the tying run on base in the ninth. The run in the eighth was provided by Brian Pozos, who hit a one-out single to right that scored a run and once again pulled Portland within two.
And then in the final inning, Lee and Whalen both reached base courtesy a pair of walks. But with two outs, Utah Valley reliever Marco Briones came in to induce a game-ending pop up from Cooper Hummel.
Tominaga (2-2) is charged with his second loss of the year, scattering nine hits in 5.0 innings. Only two of the six runs he surrendered were earned, and the junior right-hander K'd four. Relievers Marty Luckenbach, Cole Doherty and Cameron Richman all followed Tominaga on the hill.
Utah Valley starter Patrick Wolfe (1-0) registers his first win, holding the Pilots to three runs on four hits in 5.0 innings. Briones followed two Wolverine relievers and he gets his first save of the season after retiring the only batter he faced.
First pitch tomorrow evening is set for 5 p.m.
