LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Loyola Marymount Lions rebounded from yesterday's loss to defeat the Portland Pilots 8-1 at Page Stadium on Saturday night to even the three-game West Coast Conference series. The Pilots, who won the opener 3-1 on Friday, will look to win the series with the finale tomorrow afternoon.
Â
The Lions (7-12, 1-1 WCC) used two three-run innings to claim the win on Saturday. The first three runs came in the bottom of the second inning, and Jimmy Hill was responsible for two of those runs with a homer to left field.
Â
Portland (11-7, 1-1 WCC) got one back in the top of the third inning after Brady Kerr sent a one-out double to right-center field, advanced to third base on a ground out and scored courtesy a pass ball.
Â
But the Lions scored another run in the bottom of the third, added three more in the sixth and plated an insurance run in the eighth. Cassidy Brown hit a solo home run in the sixth, and Phil Caufield and Billy Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to allow the LMU to take control of the game.
Â
Kyle Dozier had a run-scoring double in the eighth, which helped the Lions claim a 10-5 edge in hits.
Â
Portland starter Davis Tominaga (2-3) takes the lost after surrendering seven runs, six earned, on six hits in 5.1 innings. He was followed by three relievers out of the bullpen.
Â
LMU's Cory Abbot (2-2) earns the win, holding the Pilots to just one run on three hits in 6.0 innings. Abbot, along with relievers Harrison Simon and Mark Finkelnburg, combined to strand nine Portland runners on the base paths.
Â
Cooper Hummel and Ryan Barr each had two hits for the Pilots, and Hummel lifts his team-best batting average to .406 on the season.
Â
First pitch tomorrow is set for 1 p.m.
