PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and Michael Forgione came through with a walk-off, two-run single as the Pilots claimed a thrilling 6-5 win over the CSUN Matadors in the first game of a double header on Thursday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots scored all six of their runs during the final three innings, and the victory snapped CSUN's 13-game winning streak.
Â
The second game of the double header then went an astonishing 15 innings before the Matadors claimed a 2-1 win, with both CSUN runs going in the books as unearned.
Â
After the Matadors (19-4) had scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth of game one, the Pilots (12-10) found themselves trailing 5-2 with only three outs to work with. But the final frame began well for Portland as Cooper Hummel and Ryan Barr started things off with a pair of singles. Kevin Farley then had the first big hit of the inning when he doubled off the left field wall. Hummel easily scored on the deep line drive, and the Pilots ended up with runners on the corners.
Â
After a fly out from Grant Taylor, the Pilots loaded the bases when Cody Hawken drew a walk. Brian Pozos then came through with a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Barr and made it a one-run game with two outs.
Â
Another walk loaded the bases once again before Forgione sent a clutch base hit to right field, scoring Hawken and Matt Kelly to cap the four-run ninth for the Pilots.
Â
The game began as a pitcher's duel as neither offense could find a rhythm against the starters Connor O'Neil and Jordan Wilcox. O'Neil held the Pilots without a hit through the game's first six innings, while Wilcox allowed just one hit through five innings.
Â
But the Matadors finally broke through with three runs in the top of the sixth. Albee Weiss had a one-run double during the inning, while Nolan Bumstead drove in two with a single.
Â
The Pilots responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth. Barr knocked in Caleb Whalen with a double in the seventh, and Forgione made it a one-run game with an RBI in the eighth. CSUN immediately got the two runs back in the top of the ninth, setting up the dramatic finish.
Â
CSUN reliever Andrew Weston (4-2) was responsible for the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings. O'Neil yielded just three hits in 7.0 innings, while striking out nine. He did let in two runs.
Â
Wilcox was solid for 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits. He fanned six and was charged with three runs. Reliever Cameron Richman (1-0) takes the win after recording three outs in the ninth.
Â
The second game followed the same script as the first as the teams played four scoreless innings with both starters dealing. CSUN again was the first to get on the board, with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Bumstead reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then with two outs, Elias doubled to left center field to score Bumstead with the game's first run.
Â
But that's all the offense the Matadors could muster as that was their lone hit until the 13th inning. CSUN still had their chances as they loaded the bases in the sixth with three straight walks. But Portland reliever Marty Luckenbach somehow escaped the jam by registering three consecutive strike outs.
Â
The Pilots then provided some more late offense with the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Farley doubled to begin the inning, and Hawken tied the game with an RBI single.
Â
Portland did get two runners on the ninth, but the Matadors got out of the inning to send it to extras.
Â
Portland's bullpen was solid as Jackson Lockwood followed Luckenbach's lead and tossed 5.2 scoreless innings. He surrendered just two hits and struck out six.
Â
But it was in the 15th when the Matadors finally tallied a run, which again was set up by a Portland error. The Matadors took full advantage with Alex Fisher now on the hill, and Jake Toerner drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a single up the middle.
Â
Fisher (0-1) takes the loss after pitching the final inning. Starter Jordan Horak tossed 5.0 innings, holding CSUN without an earned run on just the one hit. He fanned five, and Luckenbach struck out six in 3.1 innings as Portland pitchers combined to register 16 K's on the night.
Â
CSUN's Samuel Meyers (1-0) was brilliant in relief, working 7.2 innings without giving up a run. He yielded four hits and struck out seven. Starter Rayne Raven pitched 7.1 innings and fanned eight.
Â
The Pilots and Matadors now shift the series to Hillsboro tomorrow night as game three will take place at Ron Tonkin Field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and there it will feature free admission.
