SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland men's tennis team defeated Marquette by a 5-2 margin in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

The Pilots took the top two doubles matches to set the tone early and then won four of the six singles matches in straight sets.

"We played at one of the most beautiful clubs in America," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We had to win in kind of a scrappy fashion. We were effective, but definitely not beautiful. I think the difference today for us was our doubles. We came out strong and played really well at numbers one and two with decisive wins. That carried right over into the early part of the singles where we really grabbed control of matches."

Sophomore Michail Pervolarakis picked up another impressive win at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 7-6 victory at No. 1. Sophomore Alex Wallace also won at No. 4 singles with a tiebreaker in the second set. Freshman Felix Fan won both of his sets in tiebreakers at No. 5 and freshman Carlos Donat won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6.

Marquette picked up its two points at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions.

"Marquette fought and hung in there and gave us some trouble in some different parts of matches as the day went on," Gross said. "In the end I was really happy with our guys' toughness and fighting through Marquette's rally."

Portland will return to the court next week by hosting a pair of West Coast Conference opponents. The Pilots welcome San Francisco to the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on Friday at 10 a.m. and then Santa Clara on Sunday at 10 a.m.
