TACOMA, Wash. --- Trailing Seattle U by three, the Portland Pilots scored four unanswered runs during the final three-and-half innings to claim a 4-3 comeback win over the Redhawks in a non-conference game played on a perfect Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium. Brady Kerr went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI's in the win.
One of those doubles came in the bottom of the eighth inning with the Pilots (14-22) trailing 3-2. Eric Sapp led off the frame with a two-bagger, and Kerr followed with a double of his own, driving in Sapp with the game-tying run. Kerr then alertly moved to third base on ball four to Grant Sutton, which got away from the Seattle (23-13) catcher.
Next up was Grant Taylor, who grounded out to first base. But Kerr easily scored the go-ahead run, giving Taylor what proved to be the game-winning RBI.
Jackson Lockwood (1-1), who had entered the game to begin the eighth inning, then retired the Redhawks in order in the top of the ninth to register his first win of the year. Lockwood was nearly perfect in 2.0 innings of relief, allowing only one walk.
The Portland bullpen was solid after the Redhawks had scored two early runs. Lockwood was the fifth Pilot pitcher on the day, and Marty Luckenbach surrendered just one run in 4.0 efficient innings. Starter Cameron Richman was charged with two runs in 1.2 innings.
The Redhawks quickly got on the board in the first inning when Griffin Andreychuk hit a triple deep into the right-center gap. Dalton Hurd easily scored from second base, giving Seattle U the 1-0 lead. The Redhawks got runners on first and second with one out, but the Pilots did well to avoid further damage by turning an inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play.
The Pilots looked as if they had an answer in the bottom of the frame as a Michael Forgione singled and Cooper Hummel drew a two-out walk. Kevin Farley then drove a line drive to deep center field, but Hurd made a stellar leaping catch to secure the final out.
In the top of the second, Seattle took a 2-0 lead without the benefit of getting a hit. Two walks and two hit batters pushed across the game's second run, but again the Pilots appeared to have a response in their portion of the inning, this time loading the bases. But Seattle starter Grant Gunning settled down and got Jason Rosen to pop out to third, ending the inning.
After Seattle's Brock Carpenter made a 3-0 game with a solo home run in the 5th, Hummel began the sixth with Portland's first hit since the second inning. Sapp then sent a hard-hit single to left field, advancing Hummel to third, and Kerr brought home the Pilots' first run with a single up the middle.
The Pilots then made it a one-run game with the help of consecutive one-out singles from Forgione and Rosen. Both runners moved up a base on a ground out, and a Seattle error let Forgione easily score to make the score 3-2.
Seattle used four pitchers, with the loss going to Ky Dye (0-2), who allowed those two runs in the eighth.
The Pilots next head to Malibu, Calif., for a three-game West Coast Conference series against the Pepperdine Waves. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and the Pilots and Waves will play at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
