MALIBU, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots recovered from an early deficit and scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to seemingly take control of the game, but the Pepperdine Waves answered with three in the bottom of the frame to win 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves scored the winning run by drawing a walk with the bases loaded.
The win also gives the three-game West Coast Conference series to Pepperdine (20-18, 10-8 WCC), after the two teams split the first two contests.
After the game went to extra innings tied 2-2, Michael Forgione began the 10th with a single, which was followed by a base hit from Jason Rosen to give the Pilots (15-24, 2-13 WCC) runners on the corners. Pepperdine pitcher Evan Dunn then tried to pick-off Rosen at first, but the throw was off the mark, allowing Forgione to easily score the go-ahead run.
Rosen moved all the way to third base on the error, and Ryan Barr would bring him home with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
But the Waves had a response, and it came with one out and one on and Manny Jefferson at the plate in the bottom of the 10th. On a 1-0 pitch, Jefferson sent a ball over the left-field fence, tying the game 4-4 with a two-run homer.
Pepperdine wasn't finished as the Waves followed the home run with a double and the walk, prompting a pitching change for the Pilots. Pepperdine then loaded the bases on a Portland error, and Chris Fornaci won it by drawing the walk-off walk.
The Pilots had fallen into an early hole as the Waves were able to get to Portland starter Jordan Wilcox for two runs in the bottom of the first. Wilcox, though, would settle down from there, holding Pepperdine scoreless for the next five-plus innings.
Wilcox allowed just six hits in 6.1 innings, while striking out six.
Marty Luckenbach continued what Wilcox starter, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings. But Luckenbach was responsible for all three runs in the 10th, and Cameron Richman (1-2) takes the loss after replacing Luckenbach in that final inning.
Portland scored one run in the second and another in the fourth inning, tying the game 2-2. Brady Kerr was responsible for both runs, knocking in one with a sacrifice fly and the other on an RBI ground out. The Pilots had nine hits on the day, with Rosen and Cooper Hummel both finishing with two each.
Pepperdine used five pitchers, and Max Green (2-0) claims the win after facing just two batters in the top of the 10th.
The Pilots next host the San Diego Toreros for a three-game league series later this week at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots and Toreros open with a double header on Friday, which is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. The finale will then take place on Saturday at 11 a.m.
