PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland led San Diego after six innings on Saturday at Joe Etzel Field, but the Toreros scored five unanswered runs during the final three frames to claim a 7-3 win over the Pilots in the finale of three-game West Coast Conference series. Ryan Barr, Cooper Hummel and Eric Sapp each had two hits for the Pilots.
Â
Neither team was able to piece together much offense during the first three innings, but San Diego (23-24, 10-11 WCC) finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth. One of the runs scored on a wild pitch, and James Bonds made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single up the middle.
Â
The Pilots responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the deficit in half. With two outs and a runner on first, Sapp singled up the middle to continue the inning. Brady Kerr followed with base hit to right field, which scored Hummel from second base.
Â
Portland kept the momentum going during the next inning, this time scoring two to surge into the lead. First Jason Rosen tied it when he sent a single to right field that scored Brian Pozos. A few batters later, Hummel gave the Pilots their first lead of the series when he also singled to right, bringing home Rosen to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Â
The Toreros then reclaimed the lead with two runs in the seventh inning before adding some insurance with two more runs in the eighth and another in the ninth. Hunter Mercado-Hood and Daniel Gardner both doubled in the seventh, with Gardner's plating two runs, which would prove to be the game-winners.
Â
Portland starter Jordan Wilcox held the Toreros to just three runs in 6.1 innings. He also fanned two and didn't issue a walk. Reliever Marty Luckenbach (3-1) takes his first loss of the year after surrendering two runs, one earned, in 1.1 innings. He was followed by Cole Doherty and Jackson Lockwood out of the pen.
Â
San Diego reliever Nick Sprengel (4-7) earns his second win of the series after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.
Â
The Pilots stay at home next week to host the San Francisco Dons for another three-game league series. Friday's opener at Joe Etzel Field is set for 6 p.m.
