SPOKANE, Wash. --- The Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the Portland Pilots 18-1 to open a three-game West Coast Conference series on Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex & Washington Trust Field. The Pilots will try to bounce back with game two tomorrow night.
The Bulldogs (18-10, 7-3 WCC) jumped ahead early with nine runs in the first three innings. Gonzaga would add three more runs in the fifth inning and six in the in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Portland (13-17, 1-6 WCC) scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning when Cooper Hummel belted his third home run of the season. The solo shot over the right-center wall was all the offense the Pilots could muster, as Gonzaga cruised to the win.
The game was delayed for about 30 minutes after a scary moment in the bottom of the sixth inning. On a pop fly to left field, Portland left fielder Cody Hawken and shortstop Matt Kelly collided, and both players stayed down for a while after the collision. Both players were carted off the field, but both were conscious and could move their extremities. The two freshmen were taken to a local hospital for further tests.
Jeffrey Bohling had a big night for the Zags, going 4-for-6 with five RBI's. Brandon Bailey (5-1) picks up the win on the hill, while Portland's Jordan Wilcox (4-2) is saddled with the loss.
First pitch tomorrow night is set for 6 p.m.
