KEIZER, Ore. --- Portland's Grant Taylor hit a solo home run and drove in four runs and Jackson Lockwood struck out eight in 7.0 solid innings as the Pilots defeated the No. 24 Oregon State Beavers 7-5 on Tuesday evening at Volcanoes Stadium. It's Portland's first win over Oregon State since 2006, and it ends a streak of 25 straight losses to the Beavers.
The Pilots (17-29) fell behind early but came storming back with a six-run fourth inning. Down 3-0, the Pilots drew five straight walks that pushed across two runs and trimmed their deficit to just a run. That's when Taylor stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded, and the senior outfielder promptly cleared the bases with a double to left-center field.
The three-run double gave the Pilots a 5-3 lead, and Eric Sapp added an RBI single before the inning was done to make it a 6-3 game, which proved to be enough thanks to Lockwood's performance on the mound.
OSU (29-16) did get two runs back in the bottom half of the fourth to pull within 6-5, but that's all they could produce against the senior right-hander.
Lockwood (2-2), who entered the game after Kevin Baker started and tossed the first 2.0 innings, scattered seven hits and registers a season-high in K's during a season-high in innings. Lockwood escaped a bit of jam in the bottom of the sixth after the Beavers got runners on the corners with nobody about. The pitcher remained composed and recorded three straight outs, including two strikeouts, to end the inning and the threat.
Lockwood then fanned two more in the seventh inning to leave a runner stranded, and he did likewise in the eighth. He then recorded the final out in the bottom of the ninth inning with the potential game-tying run at the plate.
Meanwhile Taylor added some insurance when he left the yard with a solo homer to right field in the top of the eighth to push the Pilots' lead to 7-5. It's Taylor's fourth home run of the year, which matches Caleb Whalen for the team-high.
The Beavs used six pitchers on the night, with the loss going to starter Jordan Bitton (0-2).
Portland's last win over Oregon State in 2006 was a wild 20-13 game in Corvallis. Tuesday's win over the nationally ranked Beavers is the Pilots' first over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 12 and reigning national champion UCLA to begin the 2014 season.
The Pilots will next head to Santa Clara, Calif., for their final West Coast Conference road trip of the season. The opener for the three-game series with the Broncos is set for Friday night at 6 p.m.
