SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- The Santa Clara Broncos defeated the Portland Pilots 9-1 on Saturday night at Stephen Schott Stadium in the second game of the West Coast Conference series. The Broncos also topped the Pilots on Friday night, meaning the hosts claim the three-game set.
After a scoreless first, Santa Clara (22-26, 9-14 WCC) surged ahead of the Pilots (17-31, 3-20 WCC) with a four-run second inning. Austin Fisher drove in a pair of runs with a single during the second, Kyle Cortopassi picked up an RBI with a double, and the fourth run scored courtesy a Portland error.
The Broncos pushed across another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 5-0 game, before the Pilots got on the board in the top of the sixth. With two outs and Eric Sapp on second base, Cooper Hummel drove a double into the left-center gap. Hummel's 13th double of the year easily scored Sapp to cut the deficit to four runs.
But Santa Clara answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh.
Davis Tominaga (4-9) takes the loss for the Pilots after starting and working 5.0 innings. He yielded five runs on nine hits, while fanning five. He was followed by a trio of Portland relievers.
Mitchell White (3-6) went the distance on the mound to register the complete-game win, his first on the year. He limited the Pilots to only four hits and struck out an impressive 15 batters on the night.
Tomorrow's series finale is set for 1 p.m.
