EUGENE, Ore. --- Portland junior Cooper Hummel entered the program record books with a pair of home runs, but the Oregon Ducks scored eight runs in the first inning before claiming a 15-4 win over the Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday night at PK Park. The game followed the conclusion of a previously suspended game, which was also won by the Ducks 6-1.
Â
Kevin Farley recorded an RBI single in addition to Hummel's homers, but it wasn't enough as the Ducks (26-22) jumped out to an early lead with that eight-run first inning. Oregon added another run in the second inning, two more in the third, and four in the sixth en route to the win.
Â
Hummel's first homer came with the bases empty in the top of the sixth inning. That was home run number four on the season, and his fifth happened in the top of the ninth, again with the bases empty. He now leads the team in homers, and he joins a long list of Pilots to hit two home runs in the same game.
Â
He's also the second Portland player to hit two homers in a single game this season, joining freshman Cody Hawken. No Pilot has ever tallied three home runs in the same game.
Â
Farley's RBI happened in the fourth inning, and it scored Whalen from third base. Eric Sapp added an RBI single in the ninth.
Â
Portland (17-34) starter Jackson Lockwood, who a week ago notched the win against the No. 24 Oregon State Beavers, takes the loss to drop to 2-3 on the year. He was followed by three relievers, and Jordan Horak struck out two of the three batters he faced during a flawless eighth inning.
Â
The Ducks went with pitcher by committee, and starter Matt Krook (4-3) earns the win.
Â
The day started with the Ducks and Pilots finishing a game that originally began on April 13 in Hillsboro, Ore. That game was halted after eight innings because of rain, with Oregon leading 3-1.
Â
The Pilots next wrap up the regular season by hosting the Saint Mary's Gaels for a three-game West Coast Conference series this weekend at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots and Gaels will first play a double header on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m., before playing the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
