Rio De Janeiro, Brazil --- Recent University of Portland graduate Josh Ilustre ran in the 800 meters early this morning to open the first day of track completion at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Ilustre is one of four UP alums competing at the Rio Olympics, joining women's soccer alums Megan Rapinoe, Christine Sinclair, and Sophie Schmidt.
Ilustre is the second Pilot alum to represent Guam in the Olympics, following Derek Mandell who also competed in the 800 meter in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. The two-time Olympian set a Guam national record in the 800 at the 2008 Olympics, and now uses his experience to coach other Guam Olympians, such as sprinter Regine Tugade, who's running the 100 meters, and Josh Ilustre.
Ilustre, though completing the race with a time of 1:58.85, was disqualified post-race for unknown reasons. Ilustre concluded his collegiate career with a PR in the 400m and 800m with times of 54:42, and 1:58.21 respectively. He also won silver at the 2012 Oceania Championships in the 1600 meters relay U20 division as well as a gold medal at the Micronesian Championships in the 1500 meters.
