PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Devlyn Jeter notched the equalizer and Allison Wetherington scored the game-winner in the second half as the Pilots responded to an early deficit by claiming a 2-1 win over the St. John's Red Storm at the 2016 Nike Invitational at Merlo Field on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Nike Invite team title to the Pilots, and both Jeter (Defensive) and Wetherington (Offensive) claimed individual honors.
The first half was evenly played as the two teams matched possession and shots during the first 45 minutes. But it was the Red Storm who found the back of the net first on a corner kick in the 29th minute. Samie Scaffidi sent in a ball towards the far post, and Mikhaila Martinov was there to finish into the right corner, handing the visitors a 1-0 lead. The goal is the first of the season for Martinov.
The lead would stand until just before the half when Jeter was on the end of a free kick sent in by Wetherington. Near the top of the six-yard box, Jeter elevated and sent a header past the St. John's keeper, leveling the score at 1-1. Jeter registers her first goal of the year, and Wetherington tallies her team-best third assist.
The second half belonged to the Pilots as the home team dominated time of possession and controlled the pace of play. And in the 64th minute, Wetherington scored directly off a corner kick, which would prove to be her first game-winner of the year. The senior hit a bending ball in towards the far post that landed just inside the goal line, giving the Pilots a 2-1 lead.
Portland would continue to keep possession after the goal, peppering the St. John's frame with shots throughout the second half, before prevailing with their second straight win.
The loss ends a seven match unbeaten streak to begin the season for the Red Storm (4-1-3), who are the reigning Big East conference regular season champions. The Pilots, who defeated Southern Utah 6-0 on Friday night, improve to 4-1-2.
Portland senior goalkeeper Hanna de Haan was solid, finishing with seven saves. Her counterpart, Diana Poulin, made five stops, and the Red Storm were credited with a team save as well.
Next up for the Pilots is a road trip to Corvallis, Ore., for a game on Friday night against Oregon State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Lorenz Field.
