Â
LAST WEEK
• The Pilots won the 2016 Nike Invitational at Merlo Field with wins over Southern Utah and St. John's.
• Friday night featured a scoring binge for the Pilots, who rolled to a 6-0 win over the Thunderbirds; Portland scored three goals before the half and three goals after, with Maddie Dieker scoring twice 21 seconds apart in the second half.
• On Sunday afternoon, the Pilots fell behind the Red Storm before rallying for a 2-1 win; Devlyn Jeter notched the equalizer just before the half, and Allison Wetherington, who assisted on the Jeter goal, claimed the game-winner on a corner in the 64th minute.
• Wetherington was named the invite's offensive MVP, while Jeter took home defensive MVP honors; Wetherington was also selected to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week.
Â
ABOUT THE PILOTS
• The Pilots have registered two 6-0 wins this season, with both coming against opponents from the Big Sky (vs. PSU on Aug. 26 & vs. SUU on Sept. 9); Portland hasn't scored that many goals in a game twice in the same season since 2009.
• Those six goals against Portland State on Aug. 26 were the most goals scored by the Pilots in a game since tallying seven goals during a win over Saint Mary's in 2011.
• With home wins over Southern Utah and St. John's, the Pilots claimed the team title at the 2016 Nike Invitational (Sept. 2-4); senior Allison Wetherington was named the invite's offensive MVP, while Devlyn Jeter as voted the defensive MVP.
• Wetherington was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week (Sept. 4) after notching a goal and an assist vs. St. John's on Sept. 4; her goal, which was the game-winner, was a corner kick that she bent directly in.
• Junior Hannah Griffiths Boston, who entered the year with two career goals, is currently second in the WCC and ranks 19th in the country in goals (6); she also ranks second in the WCC in both points (13) and game-winners (2).
• With three goals against Portland State, Griffiths Boston became the first Pilot to notch a hat trick since Amanda Frisbie scored four goals against Fresno State in 2012.
• Senior goalkeeper Hanna de Haan ranks ninth all-time at Portland with a career save percentage of .817; she's also currently 10th all-time in overall career saves with 107.
• Despite adding seven newcomers to the roster, the Pilots feature a veteran squad returning 14 letterwinners and eight starters.
• Leading the list of returners is senior and 2015 All-WCC Second Team selection Allison Wetherington, who was voted to the Preseason All-WCC Team for the second straight year.
• Fellow senior Ellie Boon was also selected to the all-league second team last year, and both Boon and Wetherington were part of a recruiting class that was ranked fifth in the nation back in 2013.
• Five of Portland's seven newcomers hail from the Portland metropolitan area.
• Lucy Davidson (Scappoose, Ore.), Rachel Khaw (Hillsboro, Ore.), Brianna Miyama (Hillsboro, Ore.), Natalie Muth (Scappoose, Ore.) and Rylee Seekins (Vancouver, Wash.) all call the Portland/Vancouver area home, while Larkin Russell (Spokane, Wash.) and Kimberly Hazlett (Bellingham, Wash.) hail from Washington.
• Muth already has two goals and two assists this season, Hazlett has tallied one goal and an assist and Russell has scored a goal.
• The Pilots are looking to return to the playoffs in 2016 after advancing to the post-season during 21 of the past 24 seasons.
• Portland won the NCAA National Championship in 2002 and in 2005, and the 2005 team will be inducted into the UP Athletics Hall of Fame in October.
• Head coach Garrett Smith, a Portland men's soccer alum who has been named WCC Coach of the Year six times, has posted a career overall record of 212-59-20 (.761) in 13-plus years, while guiding the Pilots to a remarkable 73-18-8 (.778) mark in the WCC.
• Also on the Portland bench is former Pilot midfielder Lisa Chambers, who's in her 10th year as an assistant coach; goalkeeping coach and UP alum Angela Harrison is in her second season on the women's soccer staff.
• The Pilots have led the nation in attendance during 10 of the last 11 years.
