EUGENE, Ore. --- Senior Alyssa Edenstrom tallied the game-winner and the Portland backline and goalkeeper Rachel Lusby were clinical as the Pilots shutout the Oregon Ducks 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game played on Monday night at Pape Field. The goal is Edenstrom's first of the year, and the center back records her second career game-winner.
And it came after Portland (5-2-2) freshmen Lucy Davidson and Kimberly Hazlett earned the Pilots a free kick on the right wing in the 61st minute. Allison Wetherington then sent a perfect ball into the area, and the 6-foot Edenstrom did the rest, elevating and finishing with a header, which would prove to be the only goal of the night.
Lusby made sure of that as she came through with a couple of clutch saves following the goal. First the sophomore made an alert stop on a low shot through traffic off the foot of Melissa Everett. Moments later Ashlee Shulz sent a well-struck shot towards the frame, but Lusby was there with a diving stop to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Time would soon run out as the Pilots picked up a key road win against their in-state rival from the Pac-12 Conference. Oregon suffers their second loss of the year to drop to 6-2-1.
The stats were somewhat misleading as the Ducks were credited with 15 shots on the night. Only a few of those came from inside the 18-yard box as the Portland backline did well to force Oregon into taking low-percentage shots from distance all night long.
Lusby, in her second start of the year, registered five saves for her second blank sheet of the fall.
The Pilots next head to Southern California on Sunday for their final non-conference game of the season, which comes against the UC Irvine Anteaters. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
