IRVINE, Calif. --- After 96 minutes of scoreless soccer, Portland freshman Natalie Muth buried the game-winner in overtime as the Pilots stunned the UC Irvine Anteaters 1-0 in a non-conference game played on a balmy Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium. Muth collects her third goal of the season and her first career game-winner.
Jess Kennedy earns an assist on the game-winner, which came when the ball found the feet of Muth after a nice combination by the Pilots six minutes into the first OT. The freshman did the rest, finishing inside the top left corner of the frame. Kennedy picks up her fourth assist on the year.
Portland (6-2-2) sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Lusby did well to keep the game scoreless, making some key saves all game long. She finished with six stops to claim her third shutout in her third start this year.
In the second half, the Portland offense created a trio of corners, which all resulted in shots. The first effort was blocked, Kaycie Young had a shot saved in the in the 60th minute, and Hannah Griffiths Boston sent a header wide in the 67th minute.
The game would remain scoreless, although Ellie Boon nearly gave the visiting side the lead in the 84th minute. But her shot was cleared off the goal line by a UC Irvine (8-4-0) defender. Moments later, Allison Wetherington sent in another dangerous ball on a corner kick, and this time the header from Maddie Dieker was saved by the UCI goalkeeper, Maddie Newsome.
And then in the final minute of regulation, Alyssa Edenstrom got on the end of a Wetherington free kick, but her header was high as the two teams went to overtime knotted up at 0-0.
Next up for the Pilots is the West Coast Conference opener against Pepperdine on Friday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff for the Pilots and Waves is set for 7 p.m.
