SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland's Hannah Griffiths Boston gave the Pilots the lead with a goal in the first half, but the Cal Poly Mustangs were able to equalize as the two sides played to a 1-1 draw at the Husky Nike Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Pilots also tied Seattle U 1-1 on Friday.
Â
Griffiths Boston's goal is her team-best fifth on the year, and it came on a stellar ball sent in by Ellie Boon. In the 21st minute, Boon drove in a cross towards the center of the box, where Griffiths Boston finished with a powerful header to hand the Pilots a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Mustangs answered in the 32nd minute when Macy Vrabel found the back of the net. The goal was set-up by Chelsea Barry, and it evened the score at 1-1.
Â
The score would hold, despite quality chances for both sides. Mid-way through the second half, Alyssa Edenstrom got her foot on a loose ball inside the 18-yard box, but her shot was high of the cross bar.
Â
Moments later Kaycie Young sent a nice header towards the Cal Poly goal on a corner kick from Allison Wetherington, but the shot ended up wide of the left post as the score remained tied.
Â
The Mustang also had some good opportunities late in the second half, hitting both the cross bar and post with shots. Portland senior goalkeeper Hanna de Haan was clutch for the Pilots, coming through with a handful of key saves as the game stayed level.
Â
Portland (2-1-2) dominated possession during the first overtime, and Kimberly Hazlett had a shot saved by Cal Poly (3-2-1) keeper Sophie Brown. During the second overtime, de Haan denied the stanza's only shot.
Â
De Haan finished the match with seven saves, while Brown countered with three.
Â
Boon earned her first assist on the year on the Griffiths Boston goal.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host the 2016 Nike Invitational next weekend at Merlo Field. First on Friday the Pilots will face the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at 7:00 p.m. Sunday brings a match with St. John's at 2:30 p.m., and both games will be part of a double header featuring the Washington Huskies.
