PORTLAND, Ore. – Olin Carter III scored a game-high 24 points and led the San Diego Toreros to a 68-52 victory over the Portland Pilots before 3,411 fans at the Chiles Center Saturday night in West Coast Conference basketball action.
Jazz Johnson paced the Pilots (9-13, 2-8 WCC) with 19 points, while Rashad Jackson added 12 points, all in the first half.
The Toreros (11-11, 4-6) gained a 37-14 rebounding margin for the game, including a 10-2 edge in offensive rebounds. San Diego shot 50 percent overall compared to Portland at 41 percent.
Brett Bailey recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds for San Diego, while Cameron Neubauer added 16 points.
Portland forward Jarrel Marshall, who was sidelined the last 13 games with a high ankle sprain, made his first appearance back in the rotation since Dec. 5. He scored five points in 21 minutes off the bench.
The Pilots played just six players on the night, as Johnson and Jackson logged all 40 minutes. Johnson has now reached double figures in all 22 games this season. Portland was without leading scorer Alec Wintering for the fourth straight game. He suffered a season-ending injury at San Francisco on Jan. 12.
Both teams opened on fire from three-point range with the Pilots hitting 5-of-7 and the Toreros 4-of-6 to start the game. Portland led for the first 10 minutes until a 3:16 dry spell turned a five-point lead into a 22-20 deficit.
The Toreros would close the half with momentum after a Flagrant 1 was called on the Pilots with 12 seconds left in the period. Bailey made both free throws and then closed the half with a fall-away jumper for a 38-30 lead.
Portland cut the margin to five on a Johnson three-pointer early in the second half, but a 9-0 run capped by a Carter III three-pointer gave San Diego a 51-37 lead. The Pilots would cut the margin to nine on three occasions, but could not get any closer down the stretch.
The Pilots committed just five turnovers for the game and forced 13, but were only able to gain an 11-9 margin in points off of turnovers.
Portland will return to action on Thursday against the Santa Clara Broncos at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Pilots will then travel to BYU on Saturday for a 6 p.m. (PT) tip.
