PROVO, Utah. --- The Portland Pilots Volleyball team battled No.7 BYU in the Smith Fieldhouse, Thursday night in a West Coast Conference match. The Cougars maintained their WCC home win streak with sweep over the Pilots with set scores of 25-15, 25-10, and 25-14. BYU has not been defeated at the Smith Fieldhouse during WCC play since 2011
The Pilots (13-6, 5-5) fought evenly with BYU (18-1, 7-0) to start the first set, reaming at 10-10 before the Cougars produced a short run headed by kills from junior Veronica Jones-Perry. Senior Sarah Savoca attempted to slow down the Cougar momentum with a kill and an ace, but BYU continued to push forward to a 20-13 lead off of kills from Jones-Perry, senior Cosy Burnett, and sophomore McKenna Miller. The Cougars then finalized the set moments later with another run to win 25-15.
BYU jumped ahead in the second set to a 6-2 lead before senior Hannah Troutman and sophomore Katie Barker each recorded kills to try and keep the Cougars close. BYU kept their momentum and surged ahead with an 11-1 run to bring them within the final points of the set. Junior Reghan Pukis and Barker put together two more kills to break up the BYU points, but the Cougars secured the set 25-10.
The Cougars again sprung forward in the third set 4-1, before Pukis and Troutman put together three kills to break up the BYU energy. The Cougars put together two more short runs to enter the final points of the set, but the Pilots answered with a 5-1 run in attempt to hold off BYU from securing set point. The Cougars then put together two more kills and a block to end the set 25-14 and complete the sweep.
Troutman led the Pilots with 12 kills and sophomore Cali Thompson had 25 assists.
The Pilots will next take on No.18 San Diego on Saturday at 12 p.m., in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
