OAKLAND, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's cross country teams ran tough in a competitive 2017 XC Championships this morning at the Metropolitan Golf Links Course in Oakland, Calif.
Â
The women's team opened up the Championships at 10:00am with four Pilots placing in the top-25. No. 4 San Francisco displayed an exceptional performance claiming both the team and individual title, with No.18 BYU finishing in second.
Â
The Portland women placed fourth overall and were led by freshman Jasmijn Lau (20:07.0), who crossed the line in eighth. Junior Taryn Rawlings (20:46.8) finshed in 16

Â
"The result is disappointing, but several women moved up well and ran tough races in their first WCC meet," said women's head coach Ian Solof.
Â
The No.3 Portland men also ran in a competitive race this morning featuring top nationally ranked teams No.2 BYU and No.29 San Francisco. Though Portland ran only three of the same men that competed at the Nuttycombe Invite, which prompted the national jump from No.25 to No.3 a few weeks earlier, the Pilots came second to the complete No.2 BYU squad that placed first at NCAA Pre Nationals.
"I was very proud of the team for competing hard," said head coach Rob Conner. "I have said it all year that BYU is the favorite to win the national meet and they proved that today. We will continue to train hard and stay focused on our ultimate goal of competing well at the national championships."
Â
Senior Jeff Thies (23:31.4) and junior Nick Hauger (23:31.6) each crossed the line in the top-10 in sixth and seventh, while freshman Reuben Kiprono (23:50.9) placed just behind them in 11

Â
Thies, Hauger, and Lau each received All-WCC First Team honors, while Kiprono was awarded Honorable Mention.
