PORTLAND, Ore. --- Kimberly Hazlett scored her first goal of the season and the Pilots hit the frame three times, but in the end it was the Santa Clara Broncos who came away with a 4-1 win over Portland in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Friday night at Merlo Field. Portland's Taryn Ries hit the crossbar twice in the first half, and Natalie Muth bounced one off the post moments later.
Â
Ries first rattled the woodwork in the 18th minute with the Pilots (3-9-1, 0-3-0 WCC) trailing 1-0. She was on the receiving end of ball flicked on by Hannah Griffiths Boston, and Ries had the keeper beat with a shot that drilled the bar.
Â
Only 26 seconds later, the freshman got another chance, this time creating her own opportunity by turning with possession into the 18-yard box. This time she hit the crossbar with a shot off her left foot as the game remained 1-0 in Santa Clara's favor.
Â
And then in the 32nd minute, it was Natalie Muth who found the frame. This time it was on a free kick whipped in by Kaycie Young towards the top of the sixth. Muth had a header denied by the left post, and Griffiths Boston couldn't quite connect on the rebound.
Â
The Broncos then took a 2-0 lead just before the half on a world-class goal by Kelsey Turnbow. The freshman had possession inside the area before hammering a shot into the far corner of the net for her fifth goal for the season. Turnbow then scored her second goal of the night in the 69th minute to push the Santa Clara lead to 3-0.
Â
Hazlett pulled one back in the 75th minute when she ran onto a ball played forward by Olivia Dedinger. Hazlett took a touch before taking another touch wide to avoid SCU goalie Melissa Lowder, and the sophomore slotted one home to cut the deficit to two.
Â
But the Broncos (7-6-1, 2-1-0 WCC) would add another goal by Delaney Baie Pridham before the end of regulation en route to the win.
Â
It was Julie Doyle who initially gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead when she scored in the sixth minute.
Â
The Pilots next welcome the San Francisco Dons to Merlo Field for a WCC match on Sunday, with kickoff slated for 3 p.m.
