PORTLAND, Ore. --- On a free kick in the 107th minute, San Francisco's Samantha Jehnings found the right corner of the net with a perfectly placed shot from about 25 yards out to hand the Dons a 2-1 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Sunday afternoon. The goal came after USF evened the score with goal late to send it to overtime.
Â
Portland's (3-10-1, 0-4-0 WCC) Larkin Russell previously gave the home side a lead with her first goal of the year, which came on a brilliant strike in the 27th minute. Russell received a pass from Kaycie Young near the top of the box, took a touch, and buried a shot into the upper 90, just out of the reach of a diving Olivia Camera, the San Francisco (5-8-2, 1-3-0 WCC) keeper. Young claimed her first assist of the season as the Pilots took a 1-nil advantage.
Â
The game would remain 1-0, despite Portland continuing to create chances during the rest of the first half and into the second. On a free kick 64th minute, Russell rattled the crossbar with a shot from about 23 yards out.
Â
From there the Dons would search for the equalizer, but Portland goalkeeper Rachel Lusby produced a couple of stellar saves to preserve the lead. Just after Russell hit the crossbar, USF looked to counter, and Jehnings hit one from long range that Lusby re-directed over the bar.
Â
Moments later, Lusby came through with another stop, this time on a shot off the foot of Maddy Glaser.
Â
But in the 83rd minute, there wasn't anything Lusby could do when a loose ball in the middle of the box found the feet of Miciah Madison, who punched it in for the equalizer.
Â
The game remained tied until Jehnings provided the game-winner with her strike from distance, that Lusby seemed to lose in the setting sun.
Â
The Pilots next head on the road, traveling to Los Angeles, Calif., for a WCC contest Saturday night against the Loyola Marymount Lions. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
