PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior forward Julie Spencer recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and six Pilots scored in double figures as Portland pulled away from the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine to claim the season-opener 76-47 on Friday night at the Chiles Center. It was a balanced attack offensively for the Pilots, who shot nearly 50 percent from the field.
Also scoring in double figures were junior Ashley Gray, sophomore Kate Andersen and freshman Maddy Muhlheim, who each finished with 11 points. Junior transfer Lisa-Marie Kaempf and freshman Josie Matz added 10 points in their debut on The Bluff.
It was all Portland (1-0) early as the Pilots scored the game's first seven points, with the help of a traditional three-point play from Andersen. The lead would soon grow to double digits, and back-to-back lay-ups from Gray and Spencer gave Portland their biggest lead of the opening frame at 16 points.
The Pilots continued their offensive outburst in the second quarter, as the lead would swell to 20 points. Andersen opened the quarter with a three-pointer, and Muhlheim, in her first collegiate game, knocked down a pair of three's as Portland took a 43-23 advantage in the halftime locker room.
Muhlheim then hit another three coming out of the break, and the rout was one. Matz came alive offensively in the third for the Pilots, and she ended the period with a three-point play to make it a 60-36 game.
Portland's lead grew to 31 points in the fourth as Hawai'i (0-1) never got closer than 23 the rest of the way.
The Pilots shot 29 of 59 from the field, connected on five three-pointers, and were an efficient 13-for-15 from the free throw line. Kaempf was a perfect 6-for-6 on free throws, and Portland held a sizable 41-26 edge on the glass. Portland also out-scored Hawai'i 34-4 in points in the paint, and the Pilots' bench outs-scored their counterparts 48-9.
Oregon native Julissa Tago, who hails from Medford, led the Rainbow Wahine with a game-high 28 points. The Pilots held Hawai'i to just 30.9 percent (17-for-55) from the field. The Rainbow Wahine hit six three-pointers, four from Tago, and went seven of 12 from the charity stripe.
Next up for the Pilots is a visit from the Willamette Bearcats on Sunday night, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
