Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland raced to an 89-52 victory over the Walla Walla Wolves Tuesday night in the late game of a basketball doubleheader at the Chiles Center. While the Pilot women defeated Utah Valley in an overtime thriller early, the men's team got off to a slow start before recovering and running to the lopsided win.
Senior center Philipp Hartwich recorded his second double-double in as many games with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Pilots (1-1). Sophomore Josh McSwiggan, senior D'Marques Tyson and junior Rashad Jackson each finished with 12 points, while sophomore Franklin Porter added 11.
All 12 active Portland players saw court time with 11 getting in the scoring column. Junior college transfer Austin Stone made is Pilots' debut and finished with five points and five rebounds. Freshman walk-on Brian Smith had a rebound and two assists in his first regular season action.
The Wolves (2-3) made it interesting early by jumping out to a 9-2 lead behind three consecutive three-pointers by Wesley Burke. The Pilots quickly found their groove with a 19-3 run sparked by a pair of McSwiggan three-pointers. Tyson also buried three triples as Portland's lead would grow into a 39-20 lead at the break.
The margin would grow to as much as 43 points late in regulation, before the Wolves were able to shave off the deficit late.
Portland shot 57 percent from the field (34-60) and held WWU to 29 percent (19-66). The Pilots were efficient from three-point range by finished 12-of-28, but once again struggled at the free throw line (9-18).
The Pilots finished with 19 assists and just six turnovers, while forcing the Wolves into 14 turnovers. Portland used its superior size to garner a 40-32 rebounding margin and 42-8 advantage in points in the paint.
Roy Zavala was the lone WWU player in double figures with 17 points.
