PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots cut a 23-point second half margin down to five, but Oklahoma rallied behind freshman phenom Trae Young for a 93-71 victory in the consolation semifinals of the PK80 Phil Knight Invitational Victory Bracket Friday afternoon at the Moda Center.
Young carried the Sooners (3-1) with 33 points, five rebounds and eight assists, including 10 points during the late run to create separation.
Portland freshman point guard JoJo Walker played big as well with a team-high 15 points and six rebounds for the Pilots (2-3), but missed the final 10 minutes of regulation after getting hit in the face.
Sophomores Franklin Porter and Josh McSwiggan added 13 points each for the Pilots, while senior forward Khadeem Lattin finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Sooners.
Oklahoma gained a 40-29 rebounding edge in the game and 42-22 margin for points in the paint. Portland countered by drilling 12-of-27 three-pointers to stay close.
With the Pilots trailing 60-37 early in the second half, Walker sparked an 8-0 Pilot run with consecutive three-point plays and then McSwiggan got a steal and dunk to make it a 60-45 deficit.
Walker drilled another three-pointer and Franklin Porter followed with back-to-back triples to cut the margin to 10. McSwiggan would hit another big three to ignite the crowd and make it a 67-62 deficit with 7:15 left in regulation. That would be as close as Portland would get as the Sooners rallied behind their All-American freshman point guard.
Portland shot 40 percent from the field and made 13-of-20 free throws on the night, while Oklahoma finished at 52 percent overall and 15-of-17 at the foul line. The Sooners also forced 16 Pilot turnovers and committed just 12.
The Pilots led briefly to start when Walker hit the game's opening three-pointer, but Oklahoma quickly answered and drilled six straight field goals late in the first half to gain a double-digit lead. The Sooners carried a 46-31 margin into the break.
The contest brought back fond memories for Portland's second-year head coach Terry Porter in his return to Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Porter played 10 years with the Portland Trail Blazers in the building and was a two-time all-star.
The tournament concludes on Sunday afternoon for the Pilots. Portland will face DePaul at 4 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum live on ESPNU. Tickets and other PK80 information is available at
