PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Julie Spencer scored a game-high 13 points, but the Pilots struggled offensively on Sunday afternoon as the Boise State Broncos left the Chiles Center with a 73-47 non-conference win. The Broncos (5-3), who are coming off a win over Washington, held the Pilots (4-5) to just 29.6 percent shooting, while combining to shoot 50.0 percent at the other end of the floor.
Â
The game was close early as neither team was able to create much separation during the first quarter. Darian Slaga gave the Pilots the lead a few minutes in when she knocked down a jumper, and Portland still led moments later when Kate Andersen converted a lay-up. The Broncos responded by scoring 11 straight points to take an 18-8 advantage into the second period.
Â
Boise State's run continued into the second, but the Pilots recovered to remain within reach of the visitors. Slaga and Spencer hit consecutive three-pointers to help spark a quick 8-0 run, and late in the half Ashley Gray found Lisa Kaempf for a lay-up that made it a 31-22 game going into the break.
Â
The Broncs then out-scored the Pilots 21-9 in the third to pull away and take control of the game. The BSU lead would grow in the fourth quarter as the Broncos won their second in a row.
Â
For Spencer, it's the third time to lead the Pilots in scoring this season, and she reaches double figures for the fourth time. The junior forward entered the game as the team's leading scorer, averaging 12.3 points per contest.
Â
Slaga just missed double-digits with eight points, while Andersen added seven. Rachell Owens finished with six points and five assists, while Maddie Muhlheim was Portland's top rebounder with five boards.
Â
Boise State featured a balanced scoring attack with Braydey Hodgins matching Spencer with 13 points off the bench. Shalen Shaw collected a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
Shaw's efforts on the glass helped the Broncos out-rebound the Pilots 43-26. BSU also claimed eight three-pointers and went 13 of 17 at the foul line, while Portland made just a pair of three's and connected on 13 free throws out of 18 attempts.
Â
The Pilots next take a week off to focus on final exams before returning to the court to host Weber State at the Chiles Center next Sunday. Tip-off for the Pilots and Wildcats is set for 2 p.m.
