BOISE, Idaho – Senior guard Chandler Hutchison tallied a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as Boise State continued its early season momentum with a 77-54 victory over the Portland Pilots before 4,518 fans Sunday afternoon at Taco Bell Arena. Sophomore Josh McSwiggan paced the Pilots with 17 points before fouling out with 7:16 left in regulation.
Senior D'Marques Tyson added 10 points, while senior center Philipp Hartwich grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Pilots (3-5).
Coming off a halfcourt buzzer-beater to beat the Oregon Ducks in Eugene on Friday, the Broncos (8-1) once again found the range early and often on Sunday. Boise State drilled 15-of-34 three-pointers and also controlled the glass by a 43-30 rebounding margin.
Boise State led by as much as 28 points in the second half.
Justinian Jessup and Chris Sengfelder added 17 points each for the Broncos, while Lexus Williams finished with 11 points.
The Broncos got off to a blistering start and were able to capitalize on UP turnovers to race out to a 47-29 halftime lead. The Pilots trailed by 16 midway through the first half, but Tyson made back-to-back runners to spark an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to 31-26.
Boise State answered with three consecutive three-pointers and rode 17 first-half points by Hutchison to gain control.
The Broncos shot 48 percent from the field and made 4-of-5 free throws. The Pilots struggled to 35 percent overall, made 9-of-22 from three-point range and just 7-of-15 at the foul line.
Boise State outscored the Pilots 24-12 in the paint and 13-2 in fast break points.
It was a homecoming for Portland freshman walk-on guard Brian Smith who played high school basketball at Boise High School. Smith played the final four minutes and grabbed one rebound and dished out on assist.
