SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland's Darian Slaga scored 18 points and Kate Andersen added 10 to help the Pilots remain within reach of the Huskies for much of the afternoon, but Washington pulled away in the second half to prevail 93-67 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Â
Slaga scored the first four points of the game for the Pilots, who led their neighbors to the north early. UW recovered with a 9-0 run, but Portland stayed close with the help of a three-pointer from Andersen. Moments later Slaga knocked down another jumper to pull the Pilots within 15-11 mid-way through the opening frame, and the Pilots were still within four when Andersen converted a fast-break lay-up off a feed from Julie Spencer. Washington's Hannah Johnson then connected on a mid-range jumper to give the Huskies a 22-16 lead after the first period.
Â
The Huskies claimed the first field goal of the second quarter, but Portland answered with six unanswered points to climb within one. Sara Zaragoza hit a nice turn-around shot, and Spencer made consecutive buckets to make it a 23-22 game. From there the Huskies created some separation and took a 39-29 lead into the break.
Â
The Pilots momentarily cut the deficit to six points when Slaga and Spencer both hit shots to open the second half, but UW would go on to score 32 points in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Â
Slaga, who's averaging close to 17 points in her two games since returning from an injury, shot better than 50 percent against the Huskies to lead Portland (3-4) in scoring for the second straight game. Andersen connected on a pair of three-pointers to reach double figures for the third time this year, and Spencer finished with seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Â
Portland shot 47 from the field but were hurt by 26 turnovers. The Huskies shot 49 percent from the floor, combined to hit 12 three-pointers, and finished with a 43-29 edge on the glass.
Â
Seven Huskies (4-3) reached double digits in points, led by Amber Melgoza and Mai-Loni Henson, who both scored 14. Henson also collected 10 rebounds to register the double-double.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host Warner Pacific on Friday night, with tip-off at the Chiles Center set for 7 p.m.
