PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Francisco Dons made 15 three-pointers and outrebounded Portland by a 51-23 margin in an 84-61 West Coast Conference men's basketball victory Saturday night at the Chiles Center. Souley Boum led all scorers with 26 points for the Dons (9-6, 1-1 WCC).
Freshman guard Marcus Shaver Jr. led the Pilots (6-9, 0-2 WCC) with 12 points.
The Dons set the tone early by racing to a 46-28 halftime lead. San Francisco controlled the first half by outrebounding the Pilots 27-9 and holding Portland to 31 percent shooting. Despite forcing nine turnovers and committing just three, the Pilots only gained a 9-4 edge in points off of turnovers as the Dons hit 10 first half three-pointers.
Portland showed signs of life early in the second half as freshman guard JoJo Walker scored all nine of his points as the Pilots cut the deficit down to 11 at 64-53 with 7:18 remaining. The Dons responded with a 15-0 run to put the game away.
Boum finished 8-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. San Francisco made 15-of-42 three-pointers and held the Pilots to 4-of-12 from beyond the arc. Portland collected just two offensive rebounds on the night, while USF grabbed 16.
San Francisco also outscored Portland by a 29-17 margin off the bench, led by 14 points from Erik Poulsen and 13 points and seven rebounds out of Chase Foster.
