LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland committed a season-high 30 turnovers as the Loyola Marymount Lions held on for a 66-60 victory Saturday afternoon in West Coast Conference action at Gersten Pavilion. Despite a 27-14 disadvantage in points off of turnovers, the Pilots had multiple chances to tie the game late in regulation.
Sophomore walk-on Xavier Hallinan gave Portland a huge boost off the bench and made consecutive layups to pull the Pilots within three at 59-56 with 2:59 remaining. The Pilots (9-17, 2-12 WCC) would get a pair of defensive stops and had two open looks at three-pointers to tie the game on consecutive possessions, but both rimmed out.
LMU iced it with a corner three-pointer from Munis Tutu for a 62-56 lead with 42 seconds left. The Pilots would get within four twice in the closing seconds, but the Lions held on for the win and season sweep.
Hallinan, who had played just seven minutes this season entering the game, was key in keeping the Pilots close. With leading scorer and primary ball-handler Jazz Johnson in first half foul trouble and UP struggling, head coach Terry Porter called his number and he delivered.
He came on for the last four minutes of the first half and settled the Pilots down to close the period, then started the second half and played a season-high 21 minutes. He also had two crucial steals late in regulation.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as Portland committed 17 turnovers in the period, while LMU started the game 1-for-12 from the field. The turnovers allowed the Lions to overcome an early 10-4 deficit with multiple points off of turnovers. LMU's lead blossomed to nine on two occasions before going into the break at 32-26.
The margin grew to 14 at 52-38 with 8:36 remaining, but Portland used an 18-7 run to close the gap and make it an exciting finish.
Portland's defense was solid for the third straight game and held LMU to 38 percent shooting overall along with 21 turnovers. The Lions capitalized by attempting 21 more field goals than the Pilots, who finished at 43 percent overall.
Rashad Jackson scored a team-high 15 points for the Pilots, while Johnson finished with 12 to extend his streak of reaching double figures in every game this season. Gabe Taylor grabbed a game-high and career-best 13 rebounds.
Brandon Brown and Buay Tauch scored 18 apiece for the Lions.
Portland will return to the Chiles Center next week to begin a four-game homestand with games against the Pacific Tigers on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then the San Francisco Dons on Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets for all remaining Pilot home games are available at PortlandPilots.com/Tickets.
