PORTLAND, Ore. – Anthony Townes finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Pacific Tigers to a 76-65 victory over the Portland Pilots Thursday night at the Chiles Center. The game featured two former Portland Trail Blazers on the sidelines as Pilots head coach Terry Porter faced off against Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire.
The Tigers (10-18, 4-11 WCC) had four players reach double figures on the night, but it was Townes that controlled the interior and blocked two shots and collected two steals as well.
Sophomore Jazz Johnson finished with 23 points to lead all scorers for the Pilots (9-18, 2-13 WCC) who have now lost 13 straight and nine in a row since losing All-WCC point guard Alec Wintering.
Sophomore walk-on Xavier Hallinan earned his first career start after playing 21 solid minutes last Saturday at LMU. The Central Catholic High School native responded by scoring eight of Portland's first 10 points and finished with a career-best 12 points on the night.
Rebounds and turnovers proved to be costly for the Pilots as Pacific gained a 43-29 margin on the boards and forced 17 Portland turnovers that led to 15 points for the Tigers.
Portland shot just 35 percent from the field, while Pacific finished at 42 percent overall.
It was a one-possession game for most of the first half as the Tigers pressured the Pilots throughout. Pacific pushed the margin to seven on two occasions and then closed the half with a Townes layup for a 33-28 lead.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 19-7 run to turn a five-point halftime lead into a 17-point margin. The lead would grow to as much as 19 points late as Pacific found its offensive rhythm in the second period.
Tonko Vuko finished with 12 points for Pacific, while D.J. Ursery and K.J. Smith added 10 each off the bench.
Gabe Taylor added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Pilots, while Jarrel Marshall chipped in nine points off the bench.
