PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Cody Hawken left the yard with a two-run home run, but the Northwestern Wildcats prevailed 9-5 on Saturday afternoon to claim the three-game non-conference series at Joe Etzel Field. Saturday's game was shortened to seven innings due to Northwestern's travel plans.
Â
The Wildcats (4-10) jumped ahead with a run in the top of the second, but the Pilots (2-11) answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to surge in front. Both runs were unearned as a handful of walks, an error and a passed ball contributed, and Justin Thaxton and Kevin Wade crossed the plate for Portland.
Â
But the lead was short-lived as the Wildcats pieced together four hits in the top of the third, which led to four runs and a 4-2 edge. Matt Hopfner had an RBI double, Alex Erro tallied a run-scoring single, and Joe Hoscheit knocked in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Beau Brundage got one of the runs back for Portland when he brought home Chris Arpan with a ground-out in the bottom of the fourth, but the Wildcats answered with four more runs in the fifth to make it a 9-3 game.
Â
The Pilots then tried to make it interesting when Hawken left the building with his third homer of the season with Ryan Hoogerwerf on base in the bottom of the seventh. But the Wildcats' reliever Danny Katz recovered to record the final three outs of the game, sealing the win.
Â
Katz (1-0) picks up the win after tossing 3.0 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed two runs on six hits, struck out three and didn't issue a walk. Katz replaced starter Josh Levy, who worked 4.0 innings.
Â
Portland starter Jordan Horak (0-3) yielded seven runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. He fanned three, and was followed by Marty Luckenbach and Connor Knutson on the mound.
Â
The Pilots next return to the road for two non-conference games at Air Force. The Pilots and Falcons are scheduled to play at 2 p.m. (Pacific) on Tuesday and 12 p.m. on Wednesday at the USAF Academy in Colorado.
Â
Portland then opens play in the West Coast Conference next weekend at San Diego.
