PORTLAND, Ore. --- Devin Kopas went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI's and the Pilots received solid pitching from Kevin Baker, Camden Muller and Marty Luckenbach as Portland claimed a 6-3 win over the Seattle Redhawks in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Mike Hicks also drove in two runs for the Pilots.
Â
One of Hicks' RBI's came in the bottom of the first inning as the Pilots (3-16) jumped out to an early lead. Kevin Wade began the scoring when he brought home Matt Kelly with an RBI groundout. Kelly had led off the game with a base hit before eventually ending up on third base. Hicks followed Wade with a single up the middle, which made the score 2-0 in Portland's favor.
Â
Baker, Portland's right-handed starting pitcher, took over from there, keeping the Seattle (7-12) bats quiet for the first three innings. The Redhawks did even the score with a run in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth, but the Pilots responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take control of the game.
Â
Beau Brundage was responsible for the first run in the fifth when he sent a single to right field, which scored Ryan Kim. Next up was Hicks, who again came through with an RBI single, pushing the Portland lead to 4-2.
Â
Kopas then provided some insurance moments later when he drilled a line-drive single to left field with the bases loaded. Both Hicks and Wade scored to make it a 6-2 game.
Â
That's all the run support the Pilots would need as both Muller and Luckenbach came through on the hill out of the bullpen. Muller allowed just one run in 3.1 innings, while striking out two. Luckenbach retired the final two batters of the game to notch his first career save.
Â
Baker's (1-3) final line included two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out six.
Â
Seattle reliever Tanner Knapp (0-1), who was the second of four pitchers for the Redhawks, takes the loss. He surrendered three runs on four hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.
Â
The Pilots recorded a season-high 12 hits, and Kelly, Brundage and Hicks each finished with two hits.
Â
On Wednesday, the Pilots and Redhawks conclude their quick two-game set with a game scheduled for 3 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
